Man in court after town centre roof incident

A 49-year-old man has appeared in court charged with burglary after he climbed onto the roof of a building.

Suffolk Police was called to Buttermarket in Ipswich at 04:35 BST on Thursday after reports of a burglary at Carats Jewellers.

Officers were then told a male suspect had climbed onto the roof of the premises where he remained for nine hours.

Daniel Coulson appeared at Ipswich Magistrates' Court on Saturday charged with three offences.

Mr Coulson was charged with intentionally or recklessly causing a public nuisance and two counts of burglary relating to two business premises in Buttermarket.

He has been remanded in custody and will appear again at Ipswich Crown Court on 17 June.

Shops were forced to close due to the incident which was resolved at about 13:40 when the police cordon was lifted.
