A road has been closed in both directions for crash investigation work after a HGV went into the canal.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue were called to the A346 Salisbury Road at 00:51 BST on Saturday following reports a large lorry had entered the canal at Burbage Wharf.

The driver was rescued from the vehicle by crews and left in the care of the ambulance service.

The fire service has said the road will be closed between Esso Island at Burbage and Blenheim Road at Marlborough "for a prolonged period of time".

A spokesperson for the fire service told the BBC crews sent to the incident "found one HGV had left the road and entered the canal".

"Poly booms were placed in the canal to contain a fuel leak from the vehicle and a clay mat was also used to plug the fuel tank to prevent further fuel leakage," the spokesperson added.

Network Rail has been asked to inspect the bridge and the Environment Agency and the local highways team were also informed of the incident, the spokesperson added.

Crews remained on the scene until just after 04:00 BST.

Motorists have been advised to take alternative routes during the closure.
