Town centre roundabout set for months of roadworks

A busy town centre roundabout is set for about 14 weeks of work, despite major roadworks already underway elsewhere in Stafford.
Resurfacing and repairs on the A34 Gaol Square roundabout need to happen now as government funding for it has to be spent in a specific time, Staffordshire County Council said.
The main roundabout resurfacing will happen at night, mostly over the school holidays to try and limit disruption, the council stressed.
Work on the roundabout and resurfacing of Gaol Road itself is set to begin on 3 June.
It will mean lane closures, temporary lights and some temporary road closures.
"While this scheme will bring significant and lasting improvements to the Gaol Square roundabout and its approaches, we understand people will be concerned about disruption," said councillor Mark Deaville, "particularly with other major works taking place around the town."
The work needs to be carried out now due to the requirements set out in the funding agreement, but the council was scheduling it as carefully as it could, he added.
The roundabout work is part of £9m of levelling up funding for Stafford to improve the town’s roads and cycling and pedestrian routes.
The A34 Gaol Square scheme includes resurfacing and repairs to the footways, kerbs and drains.
