A housing estate in south-east London is living up to its claimed reputation as England's "most patriotic estate" with a giant mural of one of the players residents hope will do well in Euro 2024.

The Kirby Estate in Bermondsey now has a huge image of midfielder Eberechi Eze - in addition to England forward, and estate namesake, Fran Kirby.

Bunting and about 700 England flags are also on show.

Locals say they hope the location will be perfect for a big celebration as the team advances in the competition.

Street artist Mr Meana said there were challenges with Eze's portrait: "It was difficult to get the natural look because the brickwork is a lot deeper than we are used to.

"So it was a little bit harder work than usual. But you know you've got to earn it sometimes. Right?"

Eze was picked because he grew up locally, starting his career at Millwall and playing as a teenager for London clubs QPR, Fulham and Arsenal before eventually joining Crystal Palace.

"He is a local lad and we believe he's a fantastic prospect, a great player," said Mr Meana.

Organiser Chris Dowse said the decorations "brighten the estate up".

"It puts a smile on people's faces and it gets everyone talking again - and then it gives everyone something to look forward to.

"Fingers crossed we can get further down the line and then we can have a big party here and watch the game and hopefully, finally, finally see the boys bringing it home.

"The women have done it - it is down to the men now."
