More than 50 firefighters tackled a blaze on the roof of a Lidl distribution centre.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to the site on Waterworth Road in Peterborough at 13:50 GMT.

One eyewitness wrote on social media that the smoke was visible "all the way down the A1".

The fire service said on Friday evening that the "quick actions" of crews "saved the building and damage was contained to the roof".

A spokesperson said the fire involved solar panels.

"The quick actions of firefighters to get water on the fire - not an easy task that high up and with a roof that size - saved the building and damage was contained to the roof," they added.

"Approximately 15 lengths of hose were connected to pump water from an open water source to reach the roof of the building, so crews could tackle the fire."

A spokesperson for Lidl said: "All our colleagues, contractors and visitors at Peterborough Regional Distribution Centre were evacuated safely, and the fire has now been contained."
