Cameras have been installed on a main road over concerns about dangerous driving and street racing.

Officers have been called to 23 reports of illegal car meetings and anti-social driving on David Whitby Way, Crewe in 12 months, said Cheshire Police.

In one incident, a vehicle overturned and landed in a hedgerow.

More than 20 drivers were caught committing offences in recent weeks since the CCTV system was fitted on the link road, said the force.

People who took part in the illegal car meetings have shown no concern for the safety of local residents and other drivers, said Insp Cliff Goodwin.

"Not only have there been incidents of speeding and racing, there has also been the associated anti-social behaviour with large groups gathering in the area," the officer stated.

The focus on David Whitby Way and a nearby housing estate was not "just about putting a few signs up to deter would-be boy racers", said Cheshire Police.

There would be regular patrols in both marked and unmarked vehicles, the force warned, and those caught driving without due care and attention or anti-socially would face prosecution.

Anybody issued with a second traffic offence report within 12 months could also have their vehicle seized.
