The £6.8m refurbishment of a lido and its surrounding promenade is expected to be completed this summer.

Work began on the Grade II-listed site at Grange-over-Sands, in Cumbria, in 2023 and the project was expected to last 14 months.

The site’s “rejuvenation” will bring many benefits to the area, Westmorland and Furness Council said.

When it is completed, the site will be open to the public but the lido will have a temporary infill.

Councillor Peter Thornton, the council's cabinet member for highways, assets and fleet, said it was “wonderful to see the project taking shape” and that it would “enable others to purse the aspiration to re-water the pool in the future”.

Mr Thornton said the site would be “one of the key jewels in Westmorland and Furness's heritage crown”.

The lido closed in 1993 after falling into disrepair.

Works on the site have included the installation of a new drainage system as well as sea wall repairs.

Campaign group Save Grange Lido wants to see the pool operational again.
