A proposed cancer care and support centre in Coventry would "make a real difference" to patients, a hospital has said.

Plans for a centre run by the charity Maggie's on the grounds of University Hospital have been submitted to the city council.

It is expected to be sited on a man-made mound, overlooking a nature reserve by the hospital.

The plans by the charity have been supported by the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust.

In documents supporting the scheme, clinical director for oncology and haematology Dr Lydia Fresco wrote: "The patients we care for at UHCW can be emotionally scarred, tired and stressed as well as physically drained.

"Having a beautiful Maggie’s centre on the hospital grounds will make a real difference to some of the sickest people who come here for care and treatment, and their family and friends."
