Peaky Blinders movie to start filming in September

Oscar winner Cillian Murphy is expected to return to his role as Tommy Shelby in the forthcoming film

The forthcoming Peaky Blinders movie - being filmed in the West Midlands – is due to start shooting in September.

The show’s creator, Steven Knight, told Birmingham World that Cillian Murphy was set to reprise his role as Thomas Shelby.

It is being shot in Digbeth, amid plans to grow the film industry in the city with 760 new jobs.

Speaking in 2021, Mr Knight said the story would continue but that the sixth series would be the final one in that form.

The drama, set in post-World War One Birmingham, had previously been slated for seven series, but the pandemic forced bosses to change their plans.

The film will take the place of the seventh series, it is understood.

The series follows the exploits of the Shelby family in Birmingham following World War One

Speaking in 2022, star Cillian Murphy said: “I think Steve has always had an endgame in mind. Covid screwed that up a bit. But now he’s got lots of plans to make a film.

“So I don’t think this is the end of the story. I think it’s probably just the end of the story in this form.

“But Steve is always bringing up ideas, and they're always good. So I'll just wait and see what he has to say.”

Filming for the new movie will take place in Digbeth

There might be more to come from Peaky Blinders after the film.

“The way these things are scheduled – it’s like turning an oil tanker around,” said Mr Knight.

“We just felt, also with the loss of Helen [McCrory], that it all seemed to be pointing towards doing what I'm calling ‘the end of the beginning.’

“Let’s end the beginning, then let's do the film. And then let's see where we go in terms of spin offs.”
