A man who died in a crash along with his dog was a "beacon of hope", his family has said.

Paul Hart, 42, from Newport, Isle of Wight, was killed when the blue Mazda 6 he was driving crashed into a tree in Calbourne Road at 22:10 BST on 7 April.

He was seriously hurt and pronounced dead at the scene. His dog Bailey had to be put down at a vets due to his injuries.

In a tribute, Mr Hart's family said: "His life, though brief, was a testament to the power of love he gave."

The statement, released by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, continued: "It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of a remarkable young man, Paul Anthony Hart, whose life was tragically cut short along with his lovely dog Bailey.

"His vibrant spirit, infectious laughter, and boundless energy touched the lives of all who knew him.

"He was a beacon of hope, a source of inspiration and a testament of resilience in the face of adversity."

Mr Hart's family said they wanted to "honour his legacy by living our lives with the same passion, kindness and generosity that he demonstrated every day".

They added they had been "humbled by the outpouring of support" and thanked the emergency services for "all the tireless efforts made".

Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
