Dog rescued after getting stuck in quicksand

A dog had to be rescued by emergency services after getting stuck in quicksand.

Fire crews, the coastguard and a specialist rescue team were called to Grange in Cumbria after the collie was trapped for more than an hour on Thursday.

The dog's owner also got stuck in the sand, but managed to free herself.

A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) said the rescue acted as a "reminder of the dangers" that could exist in coastal areas.

"Quicksand is not always obvious, but is extremely dangerous, and we remind those who enjoy our coast to do so with caution," they said.

A multi-agency response was triggered

Fire crews from Ulverston, Grange and Kendal, together with the coastguard and a team from Bay Search and Rescue, were called to the incident on Thursday afternoon.

They used specialist equipment, including airpaths, which are inflatable walkways, to rescue the collie.

The owner got stuck trying to help her dog, but managed to free herself before the arrival of emergency crews.

A spokesman for CFRS said: "Both were cold and wet but, thankfully, injury-free."
