Children's services in Bradford 'improving' - Ofsted

Children's services in Bradford are improving after "a long history of inadequate practice across children's social care", according to Ofsted.
A report into council-run Bradford Children and Families Trust shows "very positive" action has been taken to improve children's services.
The inspection by Ofsted, in February, was the eleventh visit since the trust was first rated inadequate in 2018, and the third visit since an inspection in 2022.
Eileen Milner, chair of Bradford Children and Families Trust, said: “We know that there is more work to do."
She added: "The council and the trust are united on working with children, young people and their families, and with our wider partnership network, to achieve the best outcomes for children and young people in Bradford."
Ofsted reported that "some children in Bradford have experienced many changes of social workers", but added, "the landscape is starting to change, with an increasing number of permanent staff within this practice area".
Councillor Sue Duffy, portfolio holder for children and families, said: “It’s very good to see that inspectors spoke with social workers who say they feel more settled and better supported, and that Bradford feels a more stable place to work."
'Crucial oversight'
Although progress has been made, children who have had their cases taken to court to get into care are not always benefitting, according to Ofsted.
"This is due to the longevity of practice and previous management shortfalls, which has had a profoundly detrimental impact on the lives of many children," the report read.
Ms Duffy said: “We know that there is much more to do to get services where we want them to be, and we will continue to work closely with the trust as they build on this progress and provide better services for children and families across the district.”
Bradford Council appointed Lorraine O'Donnell as chief executive last year.
The report noted: "The newly appointed CEO at the council clearly understands the challenges, recognises the importance of children’s social care and is already bringing strong and crucial oversight, support and challenge to the trust and the council."
