A church has appealed to the local community following a break-in at its food bank.

St Nicholas' Church in Thames Ditton, Surrey, said parcels and other items for food bank distribution were stolen from storage.

Police believe the burglary of the outbuilding took place between Saturday and Monday.

The church said its priority remains supporting the community.

St Nicholas' Church has been a food bank distribution point since 2020 and supports about 60 people per month.

In a statement, the church said its immediate response to the break-in was to emphasise that "we are here to help anyone who needs us, including the person who stole the items".

"We’re here for you and we can and will help. We don't judge and we forgive quickly. If you're in need please come and talk to us."

The church also said it would be tightening security.

In a post to Facebook, the church appealed to members of the community to donate items including food and cleaning or hygiene products.

Surrey Police said local officers would engage with those operating the food bank.
