Trade links discussed with Canadian diplomat

Canada's senior diplomat to the United Kingdom met various leaders during a visit to Guernsey

A visit from the Canadian High Commissioner to the UK was an opportunity to "develop Guernsey's international identity", a States leader said.

The Honourable Ralph Goodale recently made his first trip to the island.

The senior diplomat met leaders from multiple departments, the States said.

Deputy Peter Ferbrache, president of the policy and resources committee, said economic and trade links were also discussed.

A visit to Guernsey Museum was an opportunity to look at items related to Sir Isaac Brock

The States said Mr Goodale also visited Guernsey Museum, which has records of the historic links between Guernsey and Canada and items relating to Sir Isaac Brock, the Guernsey-born British army general who became known as The Saviour of Upper Canada.

Deputy Ferbrache said the visit had allowed them to "acknowledge the historic links between our jurisdictions".

He added: "Valued connections have arisen from that shared history, including the academic scholarship available for local students to attend Brock University each year, and various trips to Canada that have been arranged for students through the Guernsey Music Service."

He said the government wanted to continue to "strengthen the bilateral relationship".
