Tribute to great-great-grandfather after crash death

A 91-year-old man who died after being struck by a car has been described by relatives as "the heart of our family".

Armando Mazzone was seriously injured after being hit on Penn Road, Wolverhampton, at about 09:20 BST on 11 July and died four days later in hospital.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and is assisting officers, who have appealed for witnesses.

Mr Mazzone's family said the "wonderful" father of four "still had more years left in him".

They added the proud great-great grandfather's had left "a massive hole in our hearts".

"His family meant everything to him and he was the heart of our family," they said in a statement.

"He was fiercely independent and had a real zest for life. He planned for a future he never got to live out.

"But he was so cruelly taken from us. He fought in hospital for four days with his family at his bedside, surrounded by love."

Sgt Julie Lyman from West Midlands Police said the force was working to establish the circumstances of the collision.

"Officers have been speaking to a number of witnesses but we would ask anyone who has any further information or CCTV footage to come forward," she added.
