Rock formation gets its first writer in residence

An important geological site and popular visitor attraction has been given its first ever writer in residence.
The ancient boulders at Brimham Rocks, near Harrogate, have become an outdoor workplace for Natalie Anastasia Davies until October.
Ms Davies has been asked by site managers the National Trust to develop original work inspired by the "mysterious" rock formations.
She will also hold nature writing workshops and said she felt "privileged" to be chosen as the first person to hold the post.
The National Trust said the appointment followed the 2023 commission by Poet Laureate Simon Armitage to create a poem inspired by Brimham Rocks, and would build on that legacy.
Ms Davies said: "As a writer and human being, I believe that connection with the natural world is integral to our sense of meaning and wellbeing.
"It is a rare thing in our bustling lives to have time in nature; to be, realise and create."
Jen Taylor, visitor operations manager for National Trust Brimham Rocks, said the intention was for Ms Davies to "get to know Brimham Rocks, the people who visit and to really engage with the place and the opportunity it presents to create a conversation about nature and climate".
She added: "The workshops will provide participants with an opportunity to engage more deeply with the site, its ecology, geology and social history through creative writing workshops, walks and other associated activities."
Ms Davies said it was "such a pleasure" to collaborate with the National Trust and she was looking forward "to sharing this unique experience with communities and developing writers".
A spokesperson said the residency was due to finish with a public event at which keen writers would be able to share their work.
