No trains were operating between Par and Newquay in Cornwall after a "vehicle collided with a bridge”, track operator Network Rail said.
Great Western Railway (GWR) said at about 13:00 that a lorry hit a bridge between Roche and St Columb Road, blocking the line.
Network Rail said lines had reopened, but disruption was expected until about 17:00 BST. It also said trains may still be delayed by up to "20 minutes or revised".
The operator said specialist staff had been "examining the bridge" and replacement road transport services were conveying passengers between St Austell and Newquay in both directions.
The service added: "Train services between Par and Newquay are returning to normal but some services may still be cancelled or delayed."
Network Rail said: "Lines have now reopened following a vehicle striking a bridge between Roche and St Columb Road.
"However, whilst service recovers, trains may still be delayed by up to 20 minutes or revised."
