A 30-year-old man has died after the lorry he was driving struck a bridge in North Yorkshire and entered a river.

The crash took place on the A684 in the village of Bainbridge in Wensleydale just after 06:00 GMT, police said.

Paramedics and members of the public came to the man's aid but he was pronounced dead at the scene, a spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said.

Officers have appealed to anyone who saw a blue Volvo tipper HGV travelling from Masham then along the A684 towards Bainbridge, or anyone who witnessed the crash, to get in touch.

The force spokesperson said the bridge over the River Bain had been damaged in the crash and remained closed.

A picture from the scene showed the side of the bridge crossing the river on the edge of the village having been partially knocked down, with rubble strewn across the road.

The spokesperson thanked the members of the public who tried the help the man and added: "Our thoughts are with the driver's family."
