Police arrested a man, a council said, after one of its bin crews was allegedly threatened by a man wielding a weapon.

Peterborough City Council said it happened while the crew was on its round in Werrington on Friday morning.

While no-one was injured, the vehicle the workers took shelter in was damaged, the authority said.

"As a council we will not tolerate acts of violence and abuse towards our staff, who are simply trying to do a good job for the residents of our city," it said on social media, external.

The authority added that a man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage and remained in custody. Cambridgeshire Police has been contacted for comment.
