A 74-year-old man was left with serious injuries to his face as he was attacked by a group of teenagers outside his home, police said.
Officers were called to reports of an assault outside a property on Court Road in Snaith, at about 20:45 BST on Thursday, Humberside Police said.
The man was taken to hospital after he was assaulted when he had an argument with one of the group as they had been throwing stones at the house, police said.
Det Insp Mark Skelton said the group, made up of about six to eight people, then fled the scene, but he reassured that the force was "doing everything possible" to identify them.
''We understand that incidents of this nature may cause concern within the community, but I would like to reassure residents that we are doing everything possible to identify those believed to be involved, including reviewing CCTV footage and house-to-house inquiries," he said.
One of the teenagers in the group has been described as being about 15 years old, with blonde hair, 5ft 6in tall, and was said to be wearing a light blue T-shirt at the time of the incident.
Anyone with information or doorbell footage is asked to get in touch.
