Eastleigh Borough Council will remove the large glass recycling containers

Glass bottle banks will be removed from a borough after a council claimed they have been repeatedly misused.

Eastleigh Borough Council will remove the recycling containers from 9 September.

It has encouraged residents to use the fortnightly kerbside glass recycling service which it operates.

The local authority said it made the decision after a number of recurring issues of fly-tipping, vandalism, litter, and contamination at the bottle bank locations.

Cabinet lead for environment Cllr Rupert Kyrle said: “Removing the glass bottle banks will help reduce the council’s carbon footprint, safeguard the local amenity and encourage residents to use our glass recycling service.”

Earlier this year the council introduced cameras in fly-tipping hotspots and last month it increased the fines that could be issued to offenders.
