Blackpool Transport beat competition from Edinburgh and West Midlands

Blackpool Transport has won Tram Operator of the Year at a national awards ceremony.

The provider beat competition from services in Edinburgh and the West Midlands to secure the accolade at the National Transport Awards.

Jane Cole, managing director at Blackpool Tramway, said: "To win this award in the face of strong competition from much larger networks is a testament to the dedication and professionalism of the Blackpool Transport team".

The operator said they had used customer feedback to develop timetables in the past year, to cater for both residents and visitors for the summer season and illuminations.

"As a result, the tramway has seen a significant increase in patronage and improved operational performance."

They opened a new £23m tramline last year, linking Blackpool North rail station to the resort's seafront.

The coastal route service dates back to 1885 and carries about 5m passengers annually.
