Up to 30 additional special educational needs school places could be created at a secondary school in Surrey, according to plans submitted by the county council.

The authority is planning to build a new wing on the grounds of St John the Baptist School in Woking.

A car parking area for 20 staff members would also be created with a further 14 pupil drop off bays and three disabled spaces.

The plans were sent to Woking Borough Council as part of a formal consultation process.

Planners are confident the need for special education places in Surrey will be enough to overcome any problems with building on the green belt, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Surrey County Council’s plans are to build the new class space entirely within the grounds of St John’s.

In order to accommodate the new building it has proposed repositioning the playing fields – which it believes will "maintain sport provision at the school".

The report read: “The impact upon the playing fields was recognised at an early stage and pre-application advice sought from Sport England regarding the loss of land associated with the playing fields."
