A teenage girl has been seriously injured following a collision with a car on an A-road.

Northamptonshire Police said the incident happened on the eastbound carriageway of the A45 between Wellingborough and Rushden between a teenage girl on foot and a white Nissan Note car, on Wednesday at about 22:10 BST.

It said the victim had life-threatening injuries and was taken to University Hospital Coventry.

The driver stopped at the scene and no arrests have been made, it said.

Prior to the collision, police received reports of a group of people walking in the carriageway and officers were deployed to look for them.

Investigators from the force's Serious Collision Investigation Unit have appealed to anyone who saw a group on or beside the road before the collision and any witnesses of the incident.

The force said a mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
