The new headquarters building for Dorset Police has been officially opened.

The Princess Royal visited the three-storey building at Winfrith, met staff and toured its memorial garden.

The new building replaced the force's previous headquarters, which dated from the 1950s. It includes solar panels and features to reduce water usage.

Chief Constable Amanda Pearson said it would "provide value for money and long-term savings".

"It's of utmost importance that our officers, staff and volunteers have a working environment that supports them with their contribution to keeping people safe," she added.

Princess Anne met local dignitaries and the teams responsible for its design and build, as well as officers, staff and volunteers from various police departments.

The new building and the demolition of the old headquarters was given the go-ahead in 2022.

Dorset police and crime commissioner David Sidwick said: "This state-of-the-art facility will provide staff and officers with the tools and resources they need to serve and protect our communities effectively.

"It is a vital step forward in enhancing public safety and supporting the hard work of our dedicated police force."
