Owners of a rural landing strip that has been operating for more than 17 years are seeking confirmation that its use is allowed under planning laws.

Ridge Hill Airfield occupies a field above the village of Buckland Newton and is used by light aircraft and helicopters.

The applicants say, because the activity has been continuing for 10 years or more, they should not be required to seek planning consent.

They describe the farm strip as a "beneficial recreational facility" which has been operating "with no complaints".

Evidence submitted to Dorset Council shows the airfield has been used continuously since February 2006.

Dorset planning archives also show a light aircraft landing strip was granted permission some years earlier but operations ceased in 2002.

Owners of the field have applied for a lawful development certificate for the existing operation.

Public comments are open until 15 October.
