City councillors in Coventry want to warn parents of the danger of e-scooters

An awareness campaign is planned to warn parents of the dangers of e-scooters and e-bikes in the run up to Christmas.

The issue was brought up at a recent Coventry City Council meeting, with the bikes and scooters likely to be on Christmas lists this year.

They are already banned from some parts of the city centre, but members of the council's scrutiny co-ordination committee said more needed to be done.

One councillor, Lynnette Kelly, said: "Parents will be buying these for their kids without realising that they are too fast and dangerous."

Ms Kelly also said more legislation was needed to restrict their use and added: "It should be an offence to sell them if they go over 15 mph."

Councillor Gary Ridley said: "Personally I am sick and tired of walking out the front door of this building and nearly being run over."

"I recognise how finite resources are but it is one of those things that does have an effect on people's lives," he said.

He drew a comparison with how "50 years ago, there were some people who thought it socially acceptable to drink alcohol and drive," but people had been re-educated and laws had been passed.

"We need to go into schools and teach kids why they shouldn't do this," he said.

This news was gathered by the Local Democracy Reporting Service which covers councils and other public service organisations.
