A man in his 70s has died after being struck by a car whose driver fled following the crash.

The hit-and-run collision happened on Highters Heath Lane in King's Heath, Birmingham, around 19:30 GMT on Tuesday.

Ambulance crews arrived within four minutes, but the pedestrian was in a critical condition and died at the scene.

Police are working to identify the driver and are appealing directly to them to give themselves up.

"To the driver of the car, we would say come forward, do the right thing and make yourself known," said Insp Sam Lewis.

The victim's family has been informed and is being supported by officers, said West Midlands Police, which is appealing to locals for footage of the collision and information about the driver involved.

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent two ambulances, two paramedic officers and a critical care car after multiple 999 calls about the incident.

Sadly, despite advanced life support, the man could not be saved and was confirmed dead at the a scene short time later, said the service.
