A former Wilko store in a Nottinghamshire town has been bought by the council to provide a venue for a new construction college.

Ashfield District Council has taken over the shop in Sutton-in-Ashfield, which closed when the chain went into administration in 2023.

It will now lease the premises in Outram Street to West Notts College, which hopes to open the new site for students in September.

The college said £4m in Towns Funding would be used to convert the building "into a modern teaching facility".

'Fantastic location'

The site will become a campus for students aged 16-18, adult learners and apprentices, and will allow them to learn skills and qualifications in plumbing and electrical installation.

Both parties have now signed a 125-year lease, the college said, adding it can now begin conversion works.

Andrew Cropley, principal and chief executive of West Notts College, said: "I am delighted this landmark agreement has now been secured.

"Our new construction centre will create exciting opportunities for local people across a range of rewarding and well-paid careers, and support businesses in meeting their skills needs."

Vicki Heslop, councillor for Sutton Central and New Cross, also welcomed the news.

"The building is in a fantastic location, close to shops and local amenities, and will provide a welcome boost to local businesses," she said.
