Three people have appeared in court charged with riot, following widespread unrest across the country.

Riley Adey, 19, and Josh Kellet, 29, both from Washington, and 43-year-old Leanne Hodgson, of Holborn Road in Sunderland, appeared at Sunderland Magistrates' Court charged with the offence.

They are accused of taking part in the disorder which broke out in the city on 2 August and, if found guilty, face a maximum prison sentence of 10 years.

No pleas were entered by the defendants, who were sent to Newcastle Crown Court on unconditional bail until their next hearing on 29 November.

The riot in the city was one of many that took place across the UK, in places such as Middlesbrough, Darlington, Rotherham, Bolton, Birmingham and Belfast.

They were sparked by the deaths of three young girls, who were stabbed during a dance workshop in Southport.
