A man has been charged after police officers were attacked in Derby city centre.

Derbyshire Police said they were were called to St Peter's Street at about 13:00 BST on Friday to reports of a man carrying a spade.

Jamie Birks, of no fixed address, was arrested and subsequently charged with five counts of assaulting emergency workers and criminal damage.

The force said the 37-year-old was remanded into custody after appearing before magistrates on Saturday. He is due to appear at North East Derbyshire and Dales Magistrates' Court on 21 October.
