New charge introduced for toilets after closure
- Published
People will have to pay to use a public toilet facility once it reopens following a three-month closure.
Weymouth Town Council said the facilities in Cove Street would close on Monday 30 September for work including improvements to accessibility, lighting and ventilation.
When they reopen, people will need to pay 50p to use them with the option of paying via phone or bank card.
Councillor Matt Bell, the chair of the environment and services committee, said the facilities would be "much improved" and the money raised would be used to maintain them.
Weymouth Town Council said the work would include the installation of new, more water-efficient toilets and urinals, the addition of sensor flushes and taps, and new LED lighting.
The disabled toilet door would also be moved to make it more accessible.
The block will be fenced off during the work, with the nearest public toilet facilities being in Nothe Gardens or Maiden Street.
"I would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause in the short term," said Mr Bell.
"However, once completed, the new facilities in this busy part of the town will be much improved."
