Jersey Chief Minister Lyndon Farnham has confirmed the government remains committed to its target of reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The move is set out in the Carbon Neutral Roadmap adopted by the States Assembly in 2022.
Responding to a written question from Deputy Max Andrews, the chief minister said: "It remains the policy of this government to support the target for Jersey to reach net zero emissions by 2050, in line with the Carbon Neutral Roadmap adopted by the States Assembly in 2022."
He added the target aligned with international commitments and reflected a shared responsibility to tackle the "global climate emergency".
Addressing concerns about affordability, the chief minister said: "The Council of Ministers recognises that the transition to net zero must be managed responsibly to ensure that it remains both affordable and fair."
He emphasised the need to "balance ambition with fiscal prudence" and to protect households and businesses from "disproportionate costs".
On the possibility of achieving net-zero before 2050, the chief minister noted it would depend on factors such as technological progress, infrastructure availability, and behavioural change.
He concluded: "While the 2050 target remains the most realistic and deliverable timeframe at present, the government will keep progress under review."
