More than 10,000 people are expected to take part in the Yorkshire Marathon when it returns on Sunday.

The event, in its 12th year, will see entrants move 26.2 miles in and around York in support of multiple charities including Children's Cancer North and Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Since the inaugural event in 2013, more than £7.5m has been raised for charity in total.

The event is organised by Jane Tomlinson's Run For All, with runners and spectators advised to plan ahead as many city centre roads and bus stops will be closed during the race.

Where is the route?

The largely flat course will take a circular route through York city centre, starting from the University of York and continuing clockwise past York Minster and into Heworth.

Runners will then head out into the surrounding countryside, continuing through Stockton on the Forest and Stamford Bridge before winding through the village of Murton and returning to finish back where the race started.

What time does it start?

Runners will start at 09:30 BST and will have up to seven hours to complete the full marathon.

The wheelchair race starts five minutes earlier at 09:25.

A shorter 10 mile run and wheelchair event will also take place, both starting at 10:15, with a three hour time limit for entrants.

What road closures are in place?

Some roads will close on Saturday to allow for preparations.

University Road will be closed from 10:00 between Innovation Way and Green Dykes Lane.

On the race day, road closures on the A166, Church Balk, Church Street, Eastfield Lane, Stockhill Close, Green Dykes Lane, Heslington Lane and Main Street will take place from 06:00.

In York city centre, several major roads including Hull Road, Lawrence Street, Walmgate, Parliament Street, Coney Street, Blake Street and Monkgate will be impacted by closures from 08:00.

Roads outside the city centre will begin to close from 08:30, including A1036 Heworth Green, Stockton Lane, Sandy Lane, Common Lane, Northgate Lane, Upper Helmsley and Buttercrambe Moor Road.

Can I use public transport?

Many bus services will take different routes through the city centre, as several bus stops will be closed.

First Bus detailed a list of planned diversions for Sunday, impacting routes 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, U1 and U2.

East Yorkshire Buses also announced 747, X46 and X47 will divert for most of the day, avoiding Hull Road and city centre stops between Canham Grove and Low Ousegate.

A Park and Ride service will be provided by York Pullman for travel to the event.

Runners have been advised to purchase a ticket for no later than 08:00 to ensure an on-time arrival at the start point.

Can I park at the University of York?

There is no event parking at the University of York's Heslington Campus, where the marathon will start and end.

Run For All said that the Park and Ride service will be "essential" for anyone wishing to travel to the event by car.

Drivers will be able to park at the Elvington Park and Ride site, with tickets available to book on Run For All's website.

What will the weather be?

According to BBC Weather, York is expected to see a cloudy start on Sunday with a temperature of around 11°C in the morning and a gentle breeze.

The chance of rain increases as the day goes on, with showers likely from about 14:00 onwards.
