Student injured in assault at college

A student has been injured in an incident at a college and a person has been arrested.

The boy suffered "an assault with injury" at Reading College in Kings Road and was taken to hospital. His injuries are not life-threatening.

Armed officers were initially sent to the area, and the college told the BBC it was in lockdown earlier on Thursday.

A Thames Valley Police spokesperson said: "Officers are still in the area, so if you're worried or have any questions, please feel free to speak to them."

They added: "Contrary to media reports, this incident has not been categorised as a major incident by the force."

Police tape has been used to cordon off an area on the college site.

A student told the BBC: "We thought [a siren] was a test until we started hearing people screaming.

"That is when we started getting scared. People were calling their mums, crying in lessons."

In a statement, the college said it would be open on Friday as normal.

It said: "An incident took place at Reading College earlier today where one student was assaulted and sustained injuries and we are working with the police to support their ongoing investigations.

"We want to reassure you that this was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing risk to staff, students, or our wider community."
