Metro service resumes after wire damage disruption

Damage to overhead wires caused sections of the Metro to close on Tuesday morning

No trains ran on parts of the Tyne and Wear Metro earlier after "damaged wires" were discovered overnight.
Operator Nexus said there had been no services in either direction between Regent Centre and South Hylton, and between Four Lane Ends and South Shields.
Nexus official Kevin Storey said: "During routine maintenance checks overnight, our overhead line team identified damaged wires in the South Gosforth area."
Nexus said services had now resumed and trains were leaving its depot, but with delays of up to 30 minutes.
Metro services ran between Regent Centre and Newcastle Airport, and Four Lane Ends and St James, on Tuesday morning but not to the usual frequency.
"We apologise for the inconvenience caused to customers," Mr Storey added.
In a statement on its website, Nexus said: "Trains are running to all destinations however due to the earlier disruption we are in the process of returning the missing trains to service, until this is complete we are operating with delays to service of up to 30 minutes systemwide."
It said tickets were being accepted on local bus services between South Shields, South Hylton and Newcastle with Go North East, Stagecoach and Arriva.
The disruption follows widespread cancellations last Tuesday caused by a power supply issue, which also hit morning rush hour passengers.
