A 19-year-old man has been arrested after swastikas were spray painted on a bus shelter and in other public spaces.

South Wales Police launched an investigation after the force was alerted to the graffiti in Maesteg, Bridgend, on Tuesday night.

The man has been arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.

"This deeply offensive behaviour is totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated," said Insp Gregory Methven.

A town councillor said the acts of vandalism "bring no benefit to anyone"

Councillor Abedalkarim Fadhel said in a statement posted on social media it was "disappointing and frustrating to see that small-minded individuals have once again decided to damage our town with graffiti".

He said the offensive symbol had appeared at a bus shelter, an open room at a bus station and opposite a Chinese takeaway.

"These acts of vandalism bring no benefit to anyone. They damage our community spaces, waste public money, and tarnish the reputation of Maesteg – a town we are proud of," Fadhel said.
