An annual indoor rowing challenge to raise money for charity is under way in Jersey.

Macmillan Cancer Support Jersey said the "rowathon" would take place at The Raddison Blu Waterfront Hotel between 08:00 and 16:00 GMT.

The charity said teams would be made up of six people who would row the equivalent distance of Jersey to Sark, about 18 miles (29km), on an indoor rowing machine.

Kevin Alway, operations and communications lead, said: "Community events such as our rowathon help us provide vital emotional, practical and wellbeing support to anyone in Jersey affected by cancer'."

The charity said companies and organisations across the island were asked to take part in the rowathon, which was sponsored by Standard Bank Offshore.

It said each team was asked to raise about £1,000 and it hoped to raise more than £20,000 to fund cancer support at the Lido Medical Centre.

Standard Bank Offshore chief executive Charles Molteno said: "The rowathon is a wonderful example of how we can come together to make a tangible difference for islanders affected by cancer."
