Wojciech Burylo has been jailed for 15 years for raping and threatening to kill a woman

A "obsessional and controlling" rapist threatened to murder a woman, subjecting her to a decade of sexual and physical violence.

Wojciech Burylo, of Calvin Walk in Bewbush near Crawley, would call his victim over 40 times a day and threaten her with acts of extreme violence including decapitation.

Burylo, 50, was jailed for 15 years on Monday after being found guilty of three counts of rape, three counts of making threats to kill and one count of battery between 2014 and 2024.

Judge Roger Chapple praised the "brave and remarkable" victim for coming forward and revealing the abuse.

A trial at Lewes Crown Court in July heard Burylo controlled the life of his victim by calling her incessantly asking where she was and threatening her with violence.

Burylo was arrested in January 2024 after the victim reported the crimes – but an hour after he was released on bail he used a member of the public's phone to call and message her.

Despite then being remanded into custody he continued to send threatening letters to her from inside prison.

Burylo received a 20-year sentence, with 15 years to be spent in prison and five on extended licence.

He was also given a restraining order against his victim and will be a registered sex offender for life.

Insp Darren Taylor said: "Wojciech Burylo thought he could keep his victim under his control through years of appalling violent, sexual and psychological abuse.

"But he underestimated her, and in 2024 this incredibly brave woman told Sussex Police about his monstrous crimes.

"I hope the end of court proceedings allows her some sense of closure, as she looks to rebuild her life without any risk of further abuse from Burylo."
