A man has been arrested following reports of a rape in cathedral grounds.

Police said they were called to the incident at Hereford Cathedral during the early hours.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape and remains in custody, West Mercia Police said. The victim was being supported by specially trained officers.

Det Insp Colin Berry said CCTV footage showed people were passing by the area at the time of the incident and urged anyone with information to contact police.

“We understand that incidents like this can be unsettling for the community, and I want to provide reassurance that we believe there is no wider risk to the public,” he said.
