Extra precautions have been put in place to mitigate the impact of water run-off following a major fire at a waste services site in West Sussex.

Residents in Climping are urged to keep their windows and doors closed four days after the fire began in a large building full of recycling and plant machinery.

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service (WSFRS) said there would be an increased presence at the scene as extinguishing work continued.

“Extra precautions have now been put in place to mitigate the impact of water run-off, which will allow us to use more water to extinguish the fire,” a WSFRS spokesman said.

“People living nearby might see an increase in the amount of smoke in the area while the fire is being extinguished.”

The fire broke out just before 10:20 BST on Friday.

Eight fire engines, two water carriers and two aerial ladders attended the scene.

The nearby A259 was closed during the fire, with buses diverted during the closure. The road has since re-opened.
