The Arts Council has agreed to fund a £399,000 "culture hub" in Surrey.

The grant has been given to a new partnership including Surrey County Council (SCC), Spelthorne Borough Council (SBC), Ashford Youth Club, and Artswork.

The two-year project aims to bridge the gap between creative education and employment in Staines and create a change in how young people interact with culture.

SCC's deputy leader Denise Turner-Stewart says it is hoped the money will "expose young people to the possibility of skills and employment within this sector".

The Staines Culture Hub is due to organise a programme of creative activities and performances using the town's new library, which is set to open in 2025.

The programme will provide accessible pathways into the arts, support improved wellbeing, and contribute to the cultural, social, and economic growth of the area.

In addition to the funding from Arts Council England, the project has received match funding and support from SBC, Artswork, SCC, and other organisations, bringing the total value of the project to more than £500,000.

Ms Turner-Stewart said: "There is a strong appetite locally for this wonderful cultural offer and the opportunities, pleasure, and joy that this project will bring to the young people of Spelthorne.”
