A football club's fan zone will be allowed to open despite objections from those living nearby about the noise.

Redcar Athletic had applied for a licence to run events inside a marquee and shipping container with a bar that can host up to 350 people at its grounds on Green Lane.

But residents said the fan zone would cause an "inevitable and significant increase" in noise, potentially every weekend.

Redcar and Cleveland Council approved the licence bid but added a condition that the bar's sound system would need to automatically turn off should it become too loud.

The club's licence allows it to sell alcohol and play live music between 10:00 and 23:00 GMT, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Councillors heard how the 6m-long (20ft) shipping container and 21m-long (69ft) marquee would allow the club to host events and private parties of up to 350 people.

Gareth Rutherford, who lives near Green Lane, objected to the plans over fears the "huge" marquee would have "zero soundproofing".

Another resident, Clive Bailey said the music in the bar and marquee would be "loud enough to create a significant noise nuisance in what is basically a residential area".

A council enforcement officer recommended the application should be granted, but said noise monitoring should be carried out during amplified or live music events.
