Wedding venue closed due to 'serious crime'
- Published
A restaurant, bar and wedding venue has been made to close due to "serious crime and disorder" at the premises.
Casa Brighouse in West Yorkshire has had its licence suspended by Calderdale Council, meaning it is unable to sell alcohol or hold events, after West Yorkshire Police arrested a man on suspicion of abstracting electricity.
Police said they were called to assist with a warrant on behalf of an energy supplier at 11:30 BST on 5 August.
Three days later a council licensing sub-committee temporarily revoked the business’s licence pending a full review.
According to the police further inquiries were being made.
A notice attached to the building referred to the grounds for the licence review as being "serious crime and disorder" and applications in response must be made to the council by 4 September.
A Calderdale Council spokesperson said: “Last week, we received an application from West Yorkshire Police for a summary review of Casa’s premises licence, on the basis that the statutory licensing objectives are not met.
“We will carry out the review within the next month, which will involve looking into whether the business is being managed and operated in line with its licence conditions and the Licensing Act 2003.”
Casa Brighouse's function suite was temporarily closed in April 2023 after issues with raw sewage overflows at the site.
In December 2015, the venue was fined nearly £100,000 when a balcony collapsed injuring five people including the owner, Jack McDaid.
The same year a planning inquiry into the building of a three-storey extension without permission was held.
