A man was left unconscious and taken to hospital after he was assaulted by a group near a pub.

Essex Police were called to reports of a fight close to the Jolly Friar pub on Whitmore Way, Basildon, at about 21:15 BST on Saturday.

When officers arrived they found an unconscious man, reportedly assaulted by a group of suspects who had already left the scene.

Paramedics took him to hospital, from which he was later discharged.

Police say the nearby pub was busy and that a number of people may have vital information that could help their inquiries.

They have asked those with information to contact them directly.
