A former university accommodation complex in Leicester could be demolished and replaced with retirement flats.

The 1970s-built Mary Gee buildings, in Ratcliffe Road, Stoneygate, were closed by the University of Leicester in 2019.

Developers Gladman Retirement Living Ltd have earmarked the 3.4 acre (1.4 hectare) site for 94 apartments and communal facilities for residents.

A similar planning application was refused by Leicester City Council in 2020 with the authority ruling the proposal was not well designed or in keeping with the area's character.

A planning inspector subsequently upheld the decision to turn down the plan.

Now the developer has submitted fresh plans.

The company said it had carried out an "extensive" consultation with nearby residents and the Stoneygate Conservation Society.

In documents lodged with planners, it said its proposal had "greatly improved" as a result.

The council is considering the new application.
