Council names 25 car parks it wants to offload
- Published
Cornwall Council has named 25 car parks which could see changes as part of a plan to offload 2,000 of its assets.
Of the 25 car parks, 14 currently do not charge in the evening after 16:00, while the remaining 11 only charge between 1 April and 31 October.
The council said the decentralisation of some of its car parks was part of a bid to save £2m.
Councillors on the economic growth scrutiny committee will consider the disposal of the car parks at a meeting on Tuesday.
Millions in revenue
Senior council officer Phil Mason previously said 40 and 50 cars parks were being considered for transfer.
The authority said the car parks under consideration were classed as not being in strategic locations – for example, sites which help traffic management or would act as a location for a public transport hub.
A report to the committee said the change would involve the transfer of a car park site by means of lease to a council-owned company, which would then manage the land, said the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
"The benefits of this approach are that a single company is managing the maintenance, improvements and car park operations," the report stated.
The council currently owns 231 car parks and receives about £300,000 per year from car park enforcement income.
Paid income from parking is about £18m per year.
