Additional powers were handed to Leicestershire Police officers in part of Leicester city centre overnight after fireworks were shot at people, said the force.

A section 34 dispersal notice was issued for an area between the inner ring road and the river Soar from 20:30 GMT on Saturday.

It follows incidents the previous evening in the area around Bath Lane.

Under the notice, police can order people to leave the area - and failing to do so is an offence.

A police spokesperson said: “Police attended several reports of persons in the street on Bath Lane and surrounding area discharging fireworks at people and buildings.”

The notice remained in force until 08:00 on Sunday.
