Eleanor Hague, a 16-year-old sixth form pupil at Tadcaster Grammar School, died when the minibus she was a passenger in collided with a Hyundai i10 in Toulston Lane on Monday.

North Yorkshire Police said there were eight other passengers aged 16 to 18 on the bus, one of whom suffered serious injuries, as well as the driver.

In a statement Tadcaster Grammar School said they were "deeply saddened" by "the tragic loss", adding that their thoughts were with "everyone affected by this unimaginable tragedy".

The force said the passengers on the bus were all students at Tadcaster Grammar School and Sherburn High School, who have a shared sixth form.

Eleanor - known as Ellie - was from Sherburn in Elmet, police said, adding that her family were being supported by specialist officers.

Another teenage girl who was injured in the crash was taken to hospital by ambulance with serious injuries, though police said they were not believed to be life-threatening.

The other passengers, and the man driving the minibus, received treatment at hospital for minor injuries.

The driver of the car, a 40-year-old woman, was arrested following the crash on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving but has since been released on police bail.
