GP's have been able to prescribe cannabis-based products for medicinal use (CBPMs) since 2019.
In his response this week Binet said the total number of people dispensed medical cannabis in 2024 was about 4,000 with 20 prescribers and 53,477 prescriptions dispensed.
An audit investigated monthly returns provided by pharmacists to the chief pharmacist during 2022 and the first six months of 2023.
Binet said: "Work has subsequently been undertaken to digitise the returns process allowing for more timely information."
